Collect rods in the prison

After obtaining the Prison Key, enter the webbed area and check locks and the ground near the cells. Yamamaru Niki’s guide describes rods from prison-area locks and loose rods near the cells.

Keep an inventory slot available, interact with a lock and watch for the Iron Rod pickup notification. Check the floor around the cells as well; this is not a promise that every lock or set of bars drops a rod.

Make more in a Smelter

Yamamaru Niki describes producing Iron Rods by putting Scrap Metal and Coal into a Smelter. The same author lists five Clay and five Scrap Metal to construct that station.

  1. Get a Pickaxe and collect Clay from Goo Piles.
  2. Build a Smelter if you do not already have one; the October guide lists 5 Clay and 5 Scrap Metal for its construction.
  3. Put Scrap Metal and Coal into the Smelter to make rods. Player AdVisible5373 reports three Scrap Metal per rod; check the inputs in your own game for the Coal requirement.

Keep a rod for repairs

Repair the broken prison lever with one Iron Rod before spending your last rods on camp projects. This is the immediate progression use to remember when first exploring the cells.

Use these counts to plan a trip, then check the current recipe panel before crafting. Patch 1.0.51.0 reduced the Hammer’s rod requirement by one, so an older Hammer recipe may overstate the cost.

Iron Rod or iron bar?

Look for Iron Rod in the inventory. Players sometimes use “iron bar” when discussing a rod shortage, including one poster who used both words for the piece they spent on a Nail. A separate official Iron Bar item is not confirmed here.

Questions

Do Iron Rods come from the Workbench?

Make a replacement supply by putting Scrap Metal and Coal into a Smelter. The Workbench uses rods in recipes and is a different station.

What should I save my first spare rod for?

Keep one for the broken prison lever. After repairing it, plan the remaining rods around the station or tool you want to make next.
